s.w.e starts with the name followed by some reel-to-reel 4 track recording of bacharach-esque songs in an attempted faux-bossanova style! (never completed-anyone got a quarter inch 4 track that runs at 15ips?) played live 3 times. pat on guitar & singing, ian played guitar at one show, drums at another & bass at the other.

pat comes up with a more "indie" pop/rock sound, recording a bunch of songs with acoustic guitar, casio drum machine & dregsier voice, on ian's tascam 244 (used for all subsequent swe recordings, now out of service), then gets mitchelton freaks rodney turpin(bass) & john morris(drums) to play them live, and record 7"e.p. band becomes popular, retreats from live scene after several months.

too-far-gone-to-sell-it stuff recorded in october & november by pat while others are out of town. 1 or 2 gigs with ian on drums.

nothing happened (may be not quite true-we think there was at least 1 unpluggedy thing & a similar live-to-air during this time)

new line up with pat, ian on bass & gail hargraves on drums, playing songs new & old. studio recordings of 4 songs get "shelved". retreat from live scene after several months. shelf-life sessions begin in september with ian playing drums-without a crash cymbal. singing & bass added intermittently over the next 6 months.

shelf-life continues, many rough takes deemed fine. 2 songs go on compilations. with julian harris on bass swe starts playing live again. shelf-life released in spring. december tour melbourne & sydney.

more gigs in brisbane. bits of recording for "next album" not very much fun. things start to peter out later in the year & julian goes to europe indefinitely after christmas.

julian patterson aka wendell joins as bassplayer, although he does play drums for one show, with ian on the bass. regular gigs. most of side projects album recorded may-june(?). played in melbourne in winter. julian goes to europe indefinitely in spring. nicole thibault plays bass for a handful of gigs. december shows in melbourne with no bass, & pat rather suddenly moves to melbourne shortly after.

pat plays solo in melbourne once or twice, maybe once in geelong & also in hobart while touring with the golden lifestyle band. side projects finished. a couple of shows as 2-piece s.w.e with dion nania on guitar including one in adelaide.
